Denis Coderre Announces Support for 2003 World Youth Athletics Championships in Sherbrooke

OTTAWA, May 24, 2001 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today announced that he would provide financial support to the Third World Youth Athletics Championships that will be held in Sherbrooke, Québec, in 2003.

"It is important to provide support to events such as the Youth Athletics Championships," said Mr. Coderre. "Hosting this event here in Canada will not only be an important opportunity for our developing athletes but will also provide an important sport and economic legacy for the community."

Mr. Coderre confirmed that the Government of Canada is willing to provide infrastructure financing for event facilities provided the organizers meet the selection process of the new Canada-Québec infrastructure program. He also confirmed that Sport Canada would provide financial support to the event itself after completing a detailed analysis in the near future to ensure the Championships meet the criteria outlined in Canada's sport hosting policy.

The 2003 Championships will be held from July 2 to 6, 2003. They will bring together 1,600 young athletes from approximately 150 countries in 39 disciplines.
