Government of Canada announces funding for bobsleigh and luge world cup events

OTTAWA, November 27, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport) Paul DeVillers today announced funding of $62,500 to help stage four international bobsleigh and luge events in Calgary, Alberta.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support Canadian athletes and provide them with the opportunity to compete at such a high level. These events will provide invalueable competitive and sport development opportunities for our Canadian athletes," said Secretary of State DeVillers.

Funding from the Government of Canada will support the following four events:
Men's Calgary Cup Bobsleigh, November 21 and 22 $22,500
Women's Calgary Cup Bobsleigh, November 28 and 29 $12,000
Skeleton World Cup, November 29 $13,000
Viessmann Luge World Cup, December 1 to 6 $15,000

"These high level competitions at home will offer Canadians an opportunity to cheer on our best athletes," said Mr. DeVillers. "Hosting these competitions will also give an opportunity to our athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers to gain experience and skills that they can use at other international competitions. I wish good luck to all the athletes."

In 2002-03, the Government of Canada contributed $661,000 to Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton. Overall, the Government of Canada provides $90 million in annual funding to support participation and excellence in sport from the playground to the podium.
