Canada and Greece Sign Declaration of Intent on Sport

ATHENS, December 15, 1997 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, on behalf of the Government of Canada, and Deputy Minister of Culture responsible for Sport Andreas Fouras, on behalf of the Government of the Hellenic Republic, today signed a Declaration of Intent to develop a bilateral agreement on sport between their two countries.

"Today, Canada and Greece are continuing our record of sharing and partnership by signing this declaration of intent," said Minister Copps. "We want to learn from each other's successes in sport. We want to tap into each other's experiences. This has special significance for both countries in light of the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in Athens in 2004."

The declaration of intent signed at the Ministry of Sport in Athens is the first step toward an agreement between Canada and Greece dealing with sport at both the competitive and high performance levels.

Through joint project development, both nations will share expertise in anti-doping; development of high performance athletes; women and sport; and support for paralympic sport.

Minister Copps credited the contribution of John Cannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough Centre and Special Advisor to the Minister on Sport, with development of the agreement.

Canadian and Greek government officials will negotiate the content and terms of the activities and programs to be undertaken pursuant to an agreement on sport to be signed in 1998.
