Canada's New Government Supports Special Olympic Athletes

MARKHAM, Ontario, September 26, 2007 - The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament (Whitby-Oshawa) on behalf of Canada's New Government, today wished all Canadian athletes the best of luck as they prepare to compete at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, from October 2 to11.

"Sport has the power to unite the world in friendly competition and to inspire us to reach our potential," said Minister Flaherty, at the Team Canada send-off ceremony. "That is why Canada's New Government is committed to promoting and encouraging sport and physical activity among people of all ages and abilities. I congratulate all the athletes, coaches, and volunteers who will represent Canada in Shanghai. I know they will be excellent ambassadors for our country."

The Special Olympics World Games occur every two years, alternating between summer and winter, and are a key event for Special Olympics athletes. Team Canada will consist of 83 athletes, 22 volunteer coaches, and 12 mission staff who will participate in Shanghai, alongside 10 000 athletes, coaches, and delegation members from more than 160 countries.

Special Olympics Canada is a national not-for-profit organization that provides sport training and competition opportunities for 31 000 athletes of all ages and abilities. Nationwide, more than 10 000 certified volunteer coaches are currently involved with Special Olympics programs in virtually every community.

Canada's New Government is the single largest contributor to sport, contributing more than $140 million to support participation and excellence in sport, from the playground to the podium. Special Olympics Canada will receive more than $1.2 million in federal support in 2007-2008.
