<p align="CENTER"><font face="Univers" size="+2"> PRESIDENT OF HONDURAS</font></p>
<p><font face="Courier"></font><font face="Courier">Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa) David Kilgour will attend the
inauguration of the President of Honduras, Carlos Flores, in Tegucigalpa,
Honduras, on January 27, 1998. </font></p>
<p><font face="Courier">"We congratulate President Flores on taking office. Canadians have every hope
that his program to reduce poverty and promote education, health, and economic
security in Honduras will enjoy great success," said Mr. Kilgour. </font></p>
<p><font face="Courier">On November 30, 1997, Carlos Roberto Flores Facussé, the Liberal presidential
candidate, was elected to a four-year term. It was the fifth successive
democratic election in Honduras.</font></p>
<p><font face="Courier">The Secretary of State praised President Flores' commitment to participatory
government, and expressed support for the new President's pledge to protect human
rights in Honduras. </font></p>
<p><font face="Courier">"Canada is committed to the economic, social, and democratic development of
Honduras. Our trade and investment links with Honduras are growing, and Canada is
also actively involved in a number of development projects in the country," said
Mr Kilgour. </font></p>
<p><font face="Courier">During his two-day visit, the Secretary of State will also tour <em>Los Laureles</em>, a
Canadian-funded development project involving the reforestation of the watershed
that supplies the reservoir for almost half of Tegucigalpa's water. </font></p>
<p><font face="Courier">Canadian-sponsored development projects in Honduras focus on forestry,
agriculture, and water development, as well as reducing poverty, responding to
basic needs, and improving energy infrastructure. </font></p>
