NEWS RELEASESApril 3, 1998 No. 84 CANADIAN TRADE MISSION TO CHINA WRAPS UP WITH ALMOST $800 MILLION IN NEW BUSINESS DEALS International Trade Minister Sergio Marchi completed the final leg of a trade mission to China in Hong Kong today, where he witnessed the signing of seven new business deals and expressed Canada's confidence in Hong Kong's future. Over the course of the nine-day mission, a total of almost $800 million in new business deals were signed in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. "This mission has been about helping Canadian businesses make a name for themselves in China and Hong Kong and exploring the exceptional opportunities that exist here," said Minister Marchi. "Canadian companies are competitive, export-ready and dedicated to this crucial market. The results have exceeded our expectations and show Canada's determination to be a significant player in this region." In Hong Kong, Mr. Marchi met with Mr. Tung Chee Hwa, Chief Executive for Hong Kong, Mrs. Anson Chan, Chief Secretary for the Administration of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and Mr. Martin Lee, Chairman of the Democratic Party. He also held talks on trade matters with Trade and Industry Secretary Chau Tak-hay, and delivered a keynote address to the Board of Governors of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. "In Hong Kong our goal has been to promote Canadian business and investment, as well as to use these markets as a gateway to China," said Minister Marchi. "Hong Kong remains strong, vibrant and is clearly weathering the current economic turmoil in Asia well. I am also pleased to see that Hong Kong is maintaining its own economic system and special character, while benefiting from its long-standing relationship with China." At a ceremony today, $15 million in new business contracts and $4 million in Letters of Intent were signed, involving a range of products and services such as windows for a new high rise building, Internet recruiting services, waste water treatment equipment and telecommunications and equipment services. The Minister witnessed the official opening of the Hong Kong office of the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), which will promote Canada as a key tourism destination. The two companies previously collaborated on a project to supply and install glass and aluminium facing for the Hong Kong Convention Centre and on several other construction projects in the region. Newbridge Networks, Kanata, Ontario Newbridge Networks has signed a $500 000 contract with New World Telephone of Hong Kong, to supply switches and routers for a new asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network at the telecommunications company's headquarters in Hong Kong. The network will be the first standards-based ATM network in Hong Kong, and will connect more than 1000 people across six floors of the New World Telephone building and allow voice, data and video images to be transmitted at a rapid speed. Northern Telecom, Mississauga, Ontario Nortel (Northern Telecom) has signed a contract to supply ATM technology to CM Telecom Group, the largest paging operator in China. This deal marks the first commercial sale of the Magellan Passport ATM-based enterprise network switches in China, and will boost the performance of the Group's nation-wide paging network in mainland China. The installation of the Nortel ATM network is expected to be completed in mid-1998. Nortel has had significant success in providing state-of-the-art switches to expanding telecommunications companies in Hong Kong and mainland China. Recent sales to CM Telecom Group and the three new telephone companies in Hong Kong exceed $10 million. President's Choice International, Toronto, Ontario President's Choice International has signed an exclusive deal to sell President's Choice packaged grocery products to Park'N Shop, Hong Kong's second largest grocery store chain. This deal, valued at an estimated $13 million over the next three years, marks the first time a major Canadian brand of packaged food products will be available on the shelves of a major Hong Kong retailer. Recruitex Technologies Inc., Vancouver, British Columbia Recruitex Technologies Inc. has signed a contract with Islemount Market Development Ltd. (IMD) for the distribution of Internet products in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Recruitex Technologies Asia Limited will undertake this distribution role. Teleglobe Canada, Montréal, Quebec Teleglobe Canada has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish an apprenticeship program for recent graduates of seven Hong Kong universities to receive on-the-job training at Teleglobe's offices in North America. Trojan Technologies, London, Ontario Trojan Technologies has signed a Letter of Intent to supply a UV disinfection system, which will be installed in the Shek Wu Hui sewage treatment plant in Hong Kong. The total value of this deal is $4 million. Canadian Tourism Commission, Ottawa, Ontario The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) officially opened a permanent office in Hong Kong to promote Canada as a tourism destination. The new office will be located at the Canadian Consulate General in Hong Kong and will employ two full-time staff. In 1996, tourism from Hong Kong generated $185 million in revenues in Canada. Canada received 170 000 visitors from Hong Kong in 1997. |
