NEWS RELEASESNovember 30, 2001 (12:20 p.m. EST) No. 158 MANLEY PLEASED WITH OPENING OF UNESCO INSTITUTE FOR STATISTICS IN MONTREAL John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed his pleasure with the opening today of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics in Montreal. The official opening ceremony was attended by Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and Martin Cauchon, Minister of National Revenue and Secretary of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec). "Bringing the Institute to Montreal is the result of close cooperation among UNESCO, the governments of Canada and Quebec, Montreal International and Canadian academic institutions," said Minister Manley. "The Institute will contribute to the intellectual vitality and international prestige of Montreal. It will also enable Canadian statisticians to expand their networks with top-ranking foreign and international institutions in the sector." The Institute was established by UNESCO to meet the growing needs of member states and the international community for a wider range of policy-relevant, timely, and reliable statistics in the fields of education, science and technology, culture and communication. "Locating this prestigious Institute in Montreal, with the cooperation of Montreal International, is testimony to the vitality of Quebec's largest city and the richness and diversity of Canada's scientific research and social statistics sectors," said Minister Cauchon.
