A Global Strategy for World Heritage
The World Heritage Committee adopted a
Global Strategy for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention in
1994. This strategy plays an important role in determining which sites should
be included on national Tentative Lists. It seeks to increase the types of
heritage inscribed on the World Heritage List, as well as the regional and
biogeographical representation of this heritage. The Global Strategy takes
the form of an action program designed to identify the major gaps relating
to the types of properties, regions of the world, cultures, periods, themes,
and biogeographical provinces.
Numerous regional thematic meetings and thematic
studies have been undertaken since 1994 and significant progress has
been made. Conclusions presented
to the World Heritage Committee have led to the development of broad guidelines
to improve the balance and diversity of the World Heritage List. The Global
Strategy continues to serve as a catalyst for enhancing the representativity
of world heritage.
