Reporting Requirements
NPRI Home > Reporting to the NPRI

Under the authority of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999), owners or operators of facilities that manufacture, process or otherwise use one or more of the NPRI-listed substances under prescribed conditions are required to report to the NPRI.

Facilities that did not meet the reporting criteria or were exempt in 2005 should review their status to determine whether they are required to report for the 2006 reporting year. Environment Canada should be informed in writing of the current status.

OWNERS - One Window to National Environmental Reporting System

Once again this year, the NPRI will be using Environment Canada's One Window to National Environmental Reporting System , or OWNERS, to collect the data that must be submitted. OWNERS is a leading edge, on-line reporting system to collect environmental information and data from industries that must report on their emissions. It was developed by Environment Canada, in collaboration with provincial partners and other stakeholders. It is fully supported by the NPRI, which has played a significant role in developing the system. OWNERS is secure and easy to use.

New Users to OWNERS: please select this link for further instructions on getting started with OWNERS.

For a fact sheet on Implementing the new CEPA 1999 and the NPRI, visit the CEPA Registry Web site.

Reporting by the June 1st date is a legal requirement of the "Notice with Respect to Substances in the National Pollutant Release Inventory" and its amendment, published February 25, 2006 and March 3, 2007 in the Canada Gazette, Part I. The Notice and its amendment are published under the authority of subsection 46(1) of CEPA 1999. Facilities reporting after June 1, 2007 are in violation of CEPA 1999. Late reports will be referred to our enforcement and compliance staff for review and possible enforcement action. Contact Environment Canada immediately if you cannot meet this deadline.

Any violations of the NPRI will be dealt with in accordance with the CEPA Enforcement and Compliance Policy.
