Natural Attractions

Lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove, Nova ScotiaCanada’s wilderness and natural beauty make it a popular destination. The second largest country in the world with an area of 9.9 million square kilometres, Canada borders three oceans: the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Arctic. Majestic mountains, rolling hills, golden prairies, Arctic tundra, millions of lakes and rivers, rugged coast and sandy beaches are some of the landscapes that make up the country. In most areas of Canada, four distinctive seasons make nature change colours from green to flamboyant red and ochre, followed by white snow. Visiting a place at various times in the year can be a whole new experience.

The maps in this section depict nationally and internationally recognized natural areas set aside for conservation and enjoyment. There are exceptional sites all across Canada, from the Atlantic Provinces to the west coast, from the Prairies to the far north. Numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, biking and canoeing, can be enjoyed at these sites.

Each map has three background layers to choose from to provide a variety of information. For example, the ecozones in which the attractions are located describe the landscape and the flora and fauna at the sites; another background layer includes a relief map and the third, the political divisions. What's more, the attractions have links to local and provincial tourist Web sites giving further information.
