If I'm sleeping and I hear the smoke alarm, what should I do?

If the smoke alarm wakes you up in the night, get out of bed, go to the door and feel the door with the back of your hand.

If the bedroom door is cool:

  • Open the door a crack, and look for smoke.

  • If you do not see smoke, get out of the house as quickly as you can. Go to your family's meeting place outside. Never go back inside the building once you have left - not for toys, pets, or valuables. Once you are out, stay out!

  • If you see smoke, crawl to your bedroom window. If you can climb out of your window safely and without falling, leave right away. If your bedroom is on a second floor, you may want to consider purchasing a fire-resistant escape ladder.

  • If you can't open the window, or your bedroom is above the main floor and is too high for you to safely escape, then go to your bedroom window and signal firefighters.

  • Children should be told never to hide in a fire. Hiding delays the time it will take firefighters to find them.

If the bedroom door is hot:

  • Heat, smoke, and probably fire are on the other side.

  • Don't open the door.

  • Go to your bedroom window. If you can climb out your window safely and without falling, leave right away.

  • If you can't open the window, or your bedroom is above the main floor and is too high for you to safely escape, then go to your bedroom window and signal firefighters.
