What is a home escape plan?

A home escape plan is an emergency plan in case there is a fire in your house. It should include:

  • 2 possible exits for each room (the second exit is often a window)

  • A meeting place outside of the home

To plan your escape:

  • Draw a floor plan of your ground or upper floor bedrooms with two escape routes from each room.

  • Go to each bedroom and select the best window for an emergency escape. Test the windows or screens to see that they work easily and are large and low enough to use.

  • Decide on an outside meeting place to make sure everyone got out of the building safely. Once you are out of the building, stay out!

Practice your escape plan! Here's how:

  • Everyone starts off in his or her bedroom.

  • Test your smoke detector to sound the alarm.

  • Everyone swings into action - first out of bed, then to the door.

  • Each person should test his or her door carefully before opening it.

  • Everyone meets in designated area outside.
