The Sustainable Buildings and Communities (SBC) group researches and develops district energy concepts for communities of residential, commercial and institutional buildings.
 Our technology focus is on the use of district energy as an energy management system that calls upon combined heat and power (CHP) and other renewable heating and cooling systems, such as ground source heat pumps, biomass and solar.
To increase awareness of the philosophy of district energy and its role in community energy planning, we develop guidelines for planning and development of community based networks; facilitate outreach and training workshops; and support conferences of synergistic organizations.
We also support an international study tour to Scandinavian countries for elected officials and their staff from large and small communities to gain first-hand knowledge about actual projects, exchange best practices and discuss policy issues.
Who We Work With
We work in partnership with large and small communities, utilities, and associations including the Canadian District Energy Association, International Energy Agency, and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Many activities are delivered cooperatively with other government policy, program and technology groups within NRCan, Public Works and Government Services of Canada and Environment Canada.
