Your student passport: the ISIC card

The ISIC (International Student Identity Card) is recognized around the world. At VIA Rail, the ISIC is the only student ID card that entitles students 18 years of age or older to student fares in Comfort class (economy) and most of the other classes (ISIC is the only student ID card recognized by VIA).

Student fares are available for all trains and all destinations year round... and there are no service charges! Just present your ISIC wherever VIA tickets are sold. Take note: as trains frequently sell out quickly, advance ticket purchase is highly recommended - especially around the holidays.

With a VIA 6 pak, your student fare in Comfort (economy) class is phenomenal!

The ISIC also gives you reductions on admission charges to various clubs and museums or for certain cultural activities. Your ISIC will save you money in some restaurants and hotels and entitle you to discounts on a host of products and services in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world.

To obtain an ISIC, you must:

  • be a full-time student in a Canadian secondary or post-secondary institution, and be a resident of Canada aged 12 or over
  • provide a recent small-size photograph (2.7 cm x 3.4 cm/1.06 inch x 1.3 inch)
  • prove your student status with one of the following: letter from the registrar bearing the institution's seal, proof of payment of tuition for full-time studies, or class schedule on which your name and full-time student status appears.

To purchase your ISIC, bring your required documents and photo to:

  • any VIA Rail stations, where your card will be issued while you wait. The ISIC card costs $16 (tax included) if you buy it in person at a VIA Rail ticket counter. If you are intending to catch a train immediately, allow time for us to process your file.
  • any Travel CUTS/Voyages Campus travel agency.
  • any office of most student associations.

When you buy your ISIC in Canada, you will receive a free copy of the Canada Student Discount Travel Guide. Students travelling abroad can also pick up a free copy of the ISIC World Travel Handbook, which lists discounts and special services available to ISIC cardholders in 93 countries.

Go to your nearest VIA Rail station to pick up your ISIC and start enjoying these benefits from today!
