Natural Health Products Research Program

Health Canada's Natural Health Products Research Program is committed to supporting natural health product (NHP) research and knowledge based activities both directly and in partnership with The Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Initially created as a five-year grants and contribution program, since its inception in 2003, the NHPRP has provided financial support to a number of research projects and initiatives. NHP research is any form of research involving NHPs related to the following themes:

  • Biomedical research
  • Product Quality
  • Clinical research;
  • Health systems and health services research;
  • Societal, cultural, environmental influences on health and the health of populations;
  • Issues related to Natural Health Products regulations; and
  • Information and knowledge transfer.

In order to determine how best to fulfill its research mandate, a series of consultations took place with key stakeholders to determine research priorities.

Future of the Natural Health Products Research Program

Having entered its final year of operation as a grants and contribution program, the NHPRP will no longer be offering grants and contributions for NHP-based research. However, Health Canada is currently exploring ways in which the Natural Health Products Directorate can continue to play an active and meaningful role in fostering and promoting natural health products research, whether on its own or in collaboration with other agencies, both within government and the research community at large.

You may contact the Natural Health Products Research Program should you have any questions.
