SmartWay

On September 14th, 2005 in Detroit, Michigan, NRCan, through FleetSmart, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), through its SmartWay Transportation Partnership, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formally agreeing to work together on tangible projects outlined in the MOU. Designed to promote cooperation and expansion of both of our current activities in a seamless measure, it will encourage and assist the freight industry in both countries to undertake voluntary actions to reduce fuel consumption and protect the environment with verifiable emissions reductions.

The MOU highlights the main attributes of FleetSmart and SmartWay [This link opens a new window] and promotes coordination between the two programs and expansion of our respective current activities to engage the freight industry in the Canada and the U.S. Included in this coordinated effort will be the sharing and expanding of FleetSmart's "SmartDriver" training initiatives to an American audience and the expansion to Canada of SmartWay's Fleet Logistics Energy And Environmental Tracking (FLEET) Model for the capture of baseline fleet data. Overall, by joining forces, these two programs will create a distinct, cross-border program and continue playing a leadership role in energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide, particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen emissions.
