Ontario NorthlandThe Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) is a crown corporation ensuring a vast range of transportation and communications services in northeast Ontario Even 96 years after its founding, the ONTC remains true to its original mission to help this region of Ontario grow and develop by fulfilling the needs of companies and residential communities. The main north-south railway line connects North Bay to Moosonee (which is located on the south shore of James Bay), via Cochrane. (also known as JR East) is the largest passenger railway company in the world. JR East operates a network spanning 7 526 kilometres, with five dedicated high-speed Shinkansen lines between Tokyo and major cities in east Honshu, the largest island in the Japanese archipelago and home to 75% of Japan's population. Always on the cutting edge, JR East is currently developing the first train to run on hybrid diesel/hydrogen technology. This train, dubbed the New Energy Train, can reach speeds of 100 km/h and will consume 20% less energy than conventional diesel trains, as its batteries are recharged every time the train brakes. It is also quieter than conventional trains.
