Does your train carry checked baggage? To find out, visit the RESERVIA page and:

  • enter the departure and arrival stations;
  • specify the departure and return dates for your trip;
  • click on "Search".
Your choice of trains will then be displayed. Click on the "Train Service Description" for your train for a detailed description of the services available, including checked baggage services.

Already know your train number? Our Baggage Policy (PDF file) describes the services available on your train along with specific information about bringing your baggage.

How much is the fee?

Bicycles - Regardless of the number of connections:

Bicycles and child-carriers:$20
Tandems:$40

Find out how to protect your bicycle on the trip.

Canoes and similar boats (excluding rowboats) - Per train used, including connecting trains:

5.4 m (18 ft.) or smaller:$50

Travelling with a boat?

If booking online: Please send us an e-mail with your reservation confirmation number and the portion of the trip on which you would like your boat to be transported. We will make the necessary arrangements.

If booking by phone: Please inform our ticket agent.

Fare reduction: For short trips, we will reduce the extra charge so that it does not exceed your fare (excluding children's fares). The minimum fee is $20 per train used.

Masts and sailboards: You bring them along at your own risk.

Baggage cars: The new Renaissance cars used on some trains between Halifax and Montréal, Montréal and Québec City, as well as Montréal and Toronto, carry checked baggage. Yet the size of their doors prevents them from carrying items wider than 34 inches (86 cm) such as canoes, kayaks and sailboards. Bicycles and skis, however, are allowed.

Other oversized baggage

Skis: One pair of skis is considered to be a regular sized item regardless of length.

Pets: See special conditions.

Construction materials: They are not considered personal or oversized baggage, and VIA Rail reserves the right to refuse them at any time. Instead, please contact a freight carrier that serves your location. For more details, see the list of prohibited items.

All fares are in Canadian dollars and do not include taxes. Prices are subject to change without notice. Applicable discounts, terms, conditions and schedules are also subject to change without prior notice. The final cost of tickets, departure and arrival times will be confirmed at the time of booking.
