Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that Governor General Michaëlle Jean will represent Canada on a state visit to Brazil from July 6 to 15, 2007.
At the request of the Prime Minister, the Governor General will lead a delegation of Canadians, representing youth, education, culture and international development organizations, to Brazil, where they will visit Salvador, Sao Paulo and Brasilia. The Governor General will also travel to Rio de Janeiro to attend the opening ceremony of the Pan American Games and to support Canadian athletes competing in that event.
The visit will demonstrate the diversity and depth of the Canada-Brazil relationship and highlight our two countries’ shared views on such values as multiculturalism, democracy and respect for human rights and the rule of law. These shared values make Brazil a natural partner for Canada in the hemisphere. This state visit will help to increase understanding of each country and foster close cultural ties.
