Additional lot numbers of counterfeit TIGI hair products recalled

OTTAWA - Health Canada and TIGI Linea, L.P. are warning consumers not to use the following lot numbers of counterfeit, professional hair products as they may be contaminated. The lot numbers are stamped on the bottom of each bottle:

  1. TIGI BED HEAD CONTROL FREAK Frizz Control and Straightener Shampoo
    12 fl. oz./ 354.8ml
    Lot # 1C033

  2. CATWALK SEXED-UP Body Building Tonic
    8 fl. oz./ 237 ml
    Lot # 4J62431

  3. TIGI BED HEAD DUMB BLONDE Shampoo
    12 fl. oz./ 354.8 ml
    Lot# 1G163.

Recently, these three lots of counterfeit TIGI products were found to contain Enterobacter gergoviae or Burkholderia cepecia, potentially harmful bacteria which may pose a health risk to certain users. If the product contacts open wounds or gets in the eyes, infection could result.

Health Canada recommends that if you have any of these products in your possession, with the lot number as noted above, you should discontinue their use immediately and contact your nearest Consumer Product Safety regional office for information on proper disposal. The telephone numbers for the regional offices are listed at the bottom of this warning.

The products listed above are not to be sold in Canada pursuant to Section 16 of the Food and Drugs Act. Two of the products were purchased from a hair salon in the Greater Toronto Area by a Health Canada Officer.

The full line of TIGI professional hair products is sold throughout Canada. This recall applies only to the counterfeit TIGI lines listed above, not to other legitimate TIGI hair products.

Health Canada and TIGI Linea, L.P. issued a previous warning on March 6, 2003 concerning a counterfeit, professional use shampoo sold as TIGI BED HEAD MOISTURE MANIAC, Lot 10J11373. The counterfeit shampoo was found to contain Enterobacter gergoviae.
