Health Canada warns Canadians not to use Halloween handshaped, foot-shaped and coffin-shaped candles

OTTAWA - Following a market surveillance across Canada, Health Canada is issuing a warning to consumers not to use the following Halloween candles and other similar products:

  1. Bleeding Hand Candle (having an individual wick in each of the five fingers)
  2. Flesh & Bones (having an individual wick in each of the five fingers)
  3. Foot-shaped candle (having a individual wick on the 2nd and 4th toes)
  4. Coffin-shaped candle (having two wicks at the top of the coffin)

Health Canada is warning consumers that these products can burn and produce a single high flame or 5 large flames close together. As the heat produced is intense, nearby materials such as curtains, clothing, window sills and other combustible materials could be ignited. The candles can also melt rapidly, creating a large pool of hot wax.

No injuries have been reported to Health Canada, to date.

Consumers that have these types of Halloween candles should stop using them immediately, dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.

Health Canada inspectors are requesting retailers to remove these candles from sale and importers/distributors are being asked to recall the candles and discontinue further distribution.

Health Canada takes this opportunity to remind the public that special caution should always be taken around all open flame sources.

For more information, consumers should contact the nearest regional Product Safety office of Health Canada.
