Business Development Office (BDO)
Summary
The Business Development Office (BDO) focuses on promoting effective relationships between CANMET Energy Technology Centre-Ottawa (CETC-Ottawa) and its clients and stakeholders. By encouraging this relationship, BDO creates the gateway for the commercialization of CETC-Ottawa's intellectual property and promotion opportunities in global energy markets.
The BDO office is a unit within CETC-Ottawa and is physically located at the Bells Corners (Ontario) campus of CETC-Ottawa.
Mission
Our mission is to further marketability of CETC-Ottawa's products and services, enhance business opportunities and foster access to international markets. We strive to position CETC-Ottawa as the leader of clean energy technologies, with state-of-the-art research facilities.
Function
External Function
- Help demonstrate to external clients how CETC-Ottawa can meet their research or technology needs
- Provide information on divisional capabilities to external audiences
- Work with clients in drafting terms and conditions of research and other types of agreements
- Encourage potential partners to license CETC-Ottawa's intellectual property or to participate in CETC-Ottawa led research initiatives
- Assist in the formation of alliances / consortia
- Promote the export of clean energy technologies through the identification of funding opportunities and the provision of information on technology transfer opportunities
Internal Function
- Assist CETC-Ottawa's research units in the identification of potential funding opportunities
- Proactively market CETC-Ottawa's capabilities through a variety of communications such as the Web and traditional publications
- Provide internal support to effectively market CETC-Ottawa at trade shows, conferences, ministerial missions, etc.

Business and Strategic Operations Team
Provides input and expertise in strategic planning, assists in the development of CETC-Ottawa's corporate business plan and liaises with PERD/OERD. Among the outcomes of these efforts is increased representation in senior planning of CETC-Ottawa's expertise and interests and aligning CETC-Ottawa programs with departmental mandates and existing and emerging federal government goals.

Business Development & Marketing Team
The efforts of this team cover a variety of objectives. Examples include:
- fostering specific working relationships between CETC-Ottawa and universities, industry, other governmental departments and associations
- ensuring best internal practices in regards to grants and contributions, contracts and intellectual property.
- monitoring and identifying potential funding sources
- providing marketing and communications services, such as the creation of promotional materials and Web site development.

- This successful group is vital in networking to provide technical expertise with other government departments and organizations and participate in trade teams to promote clean energy industry interests.

This group's strengths include their expertise in communications, Web development, targeted marketing and effective cooperation with local printing and publication services. They are a fundamental source in the field of creating visibility and recognition of CETC-Ottawa.
