What is CETC?

The CANMET Energy Technology Centre performs and sponsors energy research, technology development and demonstration within Natural Resources Canada, a department within the Canadian federal government. With offices in Devon (Alberta, near Edmonton), Ottawa (Ontario) and Varennes (Quebec, near Montreal), CETC works in a variety of partnership arrangements on the research, development, demonstration, export and outreach of innovative energy-efficient and climate-change mitigating technologies associated with alternative, renewable and conventional energy. (See organization chart).

What is CETC-Ottawa?

The Ottawa-based facilities of CETC.

What is CETC-Ottawa's mission?

CETC-Ottawa works with a broad network of domestic and foreign partners (i.e. companies, universities, other government organizations) to assess, develop and deploy energy technologies that will reduce environmental impacts (notably GHG emissions), increase productivity and generate knowledge-based economic growth in Canada.

Who are CETC-Ottawa's "clients"?

CETC-Ottawa largely targets and partners with the following industrial sectors; power generation, chemical and petrochemical, A&G; processing, the steel industry, and to some degree other government departments, non-governmental organizations and universities. In a broader sense, CETC-Ottawa's clients include associations, government stakeholders and the Canadian public.

What does CETC-Ottawa have to offer potential partners and clients?

Access to extensive laboratory and research capacity and associated technical expertise, scientific information, some funding assistance and technology brokering. Many of CETC-Ottawa's services and access to facilities are offered on a fee basis.

Why should I do business with CETC-Ottawa?

See our Reasons to Work With Us.

What is CETC-Ottawa's measure of success?

CETC-Ottawa will be measured by its ability to work with partners to build Canadian capacity to continually discover, develop and supply energy-related technologies for domestic and global markets, encourage early adoption of improved energy-related technologies and provide technical, scientific and technological support to Canada's energy policy and program activities.

What are CETC-Ottawa's science and technology (S&T) priorities?

S&T priorities are established through regular consultations with government, industry and other energy stakeholders to ensure relevance and maximum impact. Current priorities include:

  • Increasing energy efficiency in buildings: residential, commercial and institutional;
  • Reducing energy intensity of industry (new processes, products and services);
  • Increasing energy efficiency of communities through district energy and urban planning;
  • Reducing emissions from fossil fuel fired combustion (CO2, particulate matter, mercury, NOx, SOx,);
  • Reducing emissions from transportation (particulates, NOx, CO, VOC's) and promoting alternative fuels such as natural gas, alcohols, other biomass-derived liquids, and hydrogen;
  • Developing more efficient hydrocarbon (coal, oil and gas) conversion processes;
  • Developing and promoting novel alternative/renewable energy technologies, particularly fuel cells (mobile and stationary) and wind, biomass, small hydro, solar (active & passive).

What are CETC-Ottawa's program areas?

CETC-Ottawa's programs are divided into five science and technology groups, these are:

  • Sustainable Buildings and Communities;
  • Clean Electric Power Generation;
  • Industrial Innovation Group;
  • Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Transportation Energy (HyFATE);
  • Technology Planning and Integration.

Can I receive funding for my invention / technology development / field trial / project idea?

Possibly. Refer to the Web site's funding section and carefully review the specifics of the programs you are considering. In general, CETC-Ottawa will not consider funding project proposals unless the following conditions are met:

  • You are a Canadian legal entity (e.g. registered business) owning or have rightful access to an energy technology;
  • Your technology is scientifically sound and also possesses good technical and market potential;
  • Your technology is compatible with the funding program's mandate and priorities;
  • Your project is well conceived and your organization possesses adequate financial, technical, human and managerial resources to complete its execution from start to finish; and
  • You are willing to contribute/match funds or goods and services in kind to support the project.

The decision to award your project is further based on specific program requirements and circumstances. For example,

  • The availability of program funding in any given fiscal year;
  • Your technology's proximity to commercialisation, preferably the short to medium term;
  • The level of risk;
  • Your ability to engage or partner with others who could help advance the project;
  • Anticipated energy savings, environmental, social, economic and industrial impacts;

For most projects, funding is repayable upon success of the project. Repayment terms are subject to TBS policies.
