The Sustainable Buildings and Communities (SBC) group performs research, development and deployment of energy technologies for new and existing housing.
Our technology focus is on whole-house design; building envelope systems; advanced and integrated space heating, water heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; combined heat and power systems; integration of renewable energy technologies; and support of NRCan housing energy programs and policy. We also explore broader issues of embodied energy and concepts related to zero or near-zero environmental impact housing.
To create confidence in the marketplace for promising new residential technologies and systems: we assist in the development of standards and labeling systems; develop software tools; test, monitor and assess advanced technologies at our laboratories; conduct controlled field trials at the Canadian Centre for Housing Technology; monitor and assess field demonstrations across the country; and engage outreach and training activities.
Who We Work With
We work in partnership with private industry partners and consortia, utilities and associations such as the Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA), Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute (HRAI) and the Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association (CWDMA).
Many activities are delivered cooperatively with other government policy, program and technology groups within NRCan, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the the National Research Council.
