Smoking fight moves to apartments

According to Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman, the time is good to discuss possible regulations regarding tobacco smoke in multi-unit dwellings. This issue was brought foward due to a survey released by the Ontario Tobacco-free Network stating that the Majority Wants Smoke-Free Apartments .

Nova Scotia's government has tabled its 2007-2008 budget, in which it announced a tobacco tax increase of one cent per cigarette, the equivalent of $2 per carton.

Unfortunately, with no mention of tobacco control, Monday's federal budget missed an important opportunity. It missed the opportunity to address contraband cigarettes, close taxation loopholes on loose tobacco, and support Canadians in addressing this important health concern. The Canadian Council for Tobacco Control hopes that the government will recognize their responsibility to protect the health of all Canadians: those who smoke, and those who do not.

McGuinty Government Expands Study To Help Smokers Quit

Ontario Minister of Health Promotion, Jim Watson, has announced an investment of $2,5 million in the second trial of Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) Study.  In the first trial, the study helped 1,600 Ontarians to stop smoking. Those interested in participating in the STOP Study may do so by calling 1-800-350-5305 starting March 19, 2007 at 10:00 a.m.

Studies Show Exercise Cuts Cigarette Craving

A recent review of studies is concluding that as little as five minutes of exercise, such as walking and isometrics, or the flexing and tensing of muscles, was often enough to help smokers overcome their immediate need for a nicotine fix.
