We are committed to working in partnership with our stakeholders to develop regulations, standards and policies that promote safety, encourage growth and adapt to the changing environment of a unique and dynamic segment of the aviation community. That unique segment of the community consists of those recreational aviation enthusiasts and the millions of annual passenger-miles flown in personal aircraft and the amount of cargo carried by personal aircraft in Canada.

Serving general aviation, we are the focal point for a wide variety of individuals, schools, clubs, companies and organizations who participate in activities involving balloons, airships, hang-gliders, gliders, gyroplanes, ultra-lights, advanced ultra-lights and powered parachutes.

High Power Rocket Launches must be authorized pursuant to the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR 602.44). Persons wishing to launch a high power rocket must submit an application to the nearest regional office of Transport Canada, General Aviation. Address information is available by visiting Personnel Licensing and selecting General Information.

Transport Canada Regional Offices dealing with General Aviation matters are responsible for the regulatory oversight of high power rocket launches.  Regional staff will review the application to ensure that the location and launch activities will be safe and consistent with regulatory requirements. Upon a satisfactory review, Transport Canada will issue a launch authorization that may contain additional requirements to enhance launch safety.

Sub-orbital/Orbital Rocket Launches require a launch authorization pursuant to CAR 602.44.  Currently there are no regulations for this activity.  However, a Type 2A Risk Assessment will be conducted to determine if an authorization will be issued.  The authorization may also contain some additional conditions to enhance launch safety.
