Teacher's guide to data discovery This guide will support you in helping students develop basic statistical skills. It describes how to find interesting and grade-appropriate Canadian datasets online, to use appropriate graphs for displaying different kinds of data and to calculate basic statistical measures, with or without computers. It will interest teachers of mathematics, history, geography and other subjects that require a basic understanding of statistics. |

2006 Census of Agriculture: Farm operations and operators The first data from the 2006 Census of Agriculture (counts by Province or territory, Census agricultural region (CAR), Census division (CD), and Census consolidated subdivision (CCS)) are now available in E−STAT. With E−STAT you can output the data as tables, customized graphs and maps. Maps are not available for the Census Consolidated Subdivisions (CCS). This release presents the latest snapshot of the nation's agricultural industry using new data from the 2006 Census of Agriculture. You can access the data directly from the Search Census button > 2006 Census. When E-STAT is updated, the "Preview and Articles" tab will no longer be available. This page has not been updated since April 2006 because all electronic publications became available free of charge on Statistics Canada's website. You can access all articles through the "Statistics by subject" or "Publications". |

Population and dwelling counts, 2006 Census The data for the 2006 Population and dwelling counts for census tracts are now available in E-STAT. Function Modelling Using Secondary Data from E-STAT In the teaching of mathematical functions it can be helpful to model real world data with different types of functions. Over 20 examples are provided where real world data from Statistics Canada surveys can be approximated by function models (linear, quadratic, exponential, sinusoidal and logistic). All data are extracted from E-STAT and direct links are provided to the specific tables and time series. |

A new E-STAT lesson "Canada Your Age: Analysis of the 10-to-14 age group using E-STAT (2001 Census)". Intermediate students will practise using graphing tools to make tables, bar charts, stacked bar charts, scatter graphs, and histograms. Students will analyze the data represented in their graphs and draw conclusions about the data based on their analysis. 41 lessons on migration Follow the link to 41 lessons on Migration: The Human Journey searchable by provincial curriculum and level. The lessons, written by expert geography teachers from across Canada, were developed by the Canadian Council for Geographic Education in partnership with Statistics Canada. Among these lessons, Chinese Immigration to Canada uses census data on E-STAT to track the changing Chinese population of Canada. |

It contains information on food consumption and food prices, nutrition, supply and demand, as well as data on the food industry, processing, employment, productivity, trade and much more. Making a query is simple. Just select the data series, geographic area and time period. Submit the query. Click on "Show Data" and the results will be displayed. You can also download results to your own software application. |

Human Activity and the Environment: Annual Statistics, 2006 features a report which assesses the impact of transportation on the environment, and a compendium of maps, tables and figures. Note: The table lists have a link to related CANSIM tables. Please note that there is a $3 charge for CANSIM information. There is no charge if you copy the CANSIM table number and search for it in E-STAT. E-STAT is updated once a year during the summer months and provides free data to educational institutions. |

New location of the "Add new series" feature in the CANSIM database of E-STAT The "Add new series" option in E-STAT allows you to select time series from more than one CANSIM table at a time, so that they can be graphed together. This "Add new series" button can now be found on the Output specification screen- Retrieve as individual time screen. You can still also find this "Add new series" button on the Output manipulation screen. To access the CANSIM database from the E-STAT side-bar, click Search CANSIM. |

| September 20, 2006 | Alternate Interface for Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children Data Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) is a study conducted every four years for youth aged 11, 13, and 15 in approximately 30 countries to provide data on the health, well-being, and behaviour of youth. Since these data on E-STAT are very popular, we have developed an alternate interface to access this data directly from the E-STAT launch page. This portion of the website is organized in a student-friendly format, with icons representing each of 10 topics: Personal Feelings, Home Life, Friends, Risk Behaviour, School, Healthy Eating, Bullying and Fighting, Injuries and Injury Prevention, Health and Illness, and Leisure Time. Once an icon is selected, the user will be brought to a screen listing HBSC tables for that topic. The main HBSC page also includes links to relevant lesson plans and related web pages. This new interface to Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children information can be accessed from the E-STAT launch page. Click Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (data updated every four years on CANSIM). |
