Job Overview
 
The Think Tank Program is a new collaborative initiative to support independent policy research organizations in developing regions.  Initially focused on selected countries in East Africa, West Africa, South Asia and Latin America, the Program intends to strengthen a select group of independent policy research organizations, such that these organizations are providing objective, high-quality research that both informs and influences economic and social policies related to growth, equity and poverty reduction.  The Program will provide long-term general support funding to qualifying organizations, along with access to funds for training, technical assistance and mentoring to allow them to confront key challenges facing their organizations.
 
Based at the IDRC head office in Ottawa, Canada, under the supervision of the Program Leader, the Research Officer will contribute to the development and operation of the Program, produce documentation, and coordinate and disseminate information in support of the Program.  S/he will have particular responsibility for monitoring and evaluation, for outreach and dissemination of program results and for liaising with key internal and external constituents.
 
Candidate Profile  
 
Education                          
  • Masters degree in a relevant social science discipline such as international development, economics, or public administration

Experience

  • One to three years of relevant research and project coordination experience
  • Policy research or evaluative techniques experience an asset 
  • Work experience in a developing region an asset

Language

  • Bilingual Imperative position (English/French) at the following levels in the second Official Language: Oral Comprehension - B; Reading Comprehension - B; Oral Expression - B; Written Expression - B.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of economic and social policy issues in one or more of regions targeted by the Program
  • Familiarity with database management an asset
Competencies
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
  • Strong planning, organizing, coordinating, problem-solving and liaising skills under pressure when deadlines must be met
  • Sound MS-Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet skills
  • Ability to perform research-related tasks (e.g. library research, analysis and synthesis of documents, writing and editing)
  • Ability to work with others as an effective and cooperative member of a diverse, multidisciplinary, international team
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision and to be a creative self-starter
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to individual, gender and cultural differences
