Position #: 745 Location: Dakar, Senegal Salary Range: $65,334 - $78,432 Duration: Term Position - 2 Years Closing Date: Extended until November 25, 2007 Job Overview As part of the Research for International Tobacco Control (RITC) program, the Tobacco Situational Analysis for Africa project will identify opportunities for and obstacles to tobacco control, gauge country readiness and capacity for action and present a guide for immediate and long-term action for tobacco control in Africa. A portfolio of projects and a series of country, regional and global consultations will assess current tobacco use, the dynamics of tobacco farming and relevant tobacco control policies (including their level of implementation) in 10-14 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. It will identify key players at all levels (including government, non-government organizations, advocates, practitioners, media and researchers) and assess their involvement in local and regional tobacco control. The project will take initial steps to build the technical capacity of African researchers to gather, synthesize and analyze data at the country and regional level. The participation of African and global partners will ensure buy-in and support by African colleagues and engage global organizations in responding to the tobacco epidemic in Africa in a coordinated and collaborative manner. Based in Dakar, Senegal, the Program Officer will under the guidance of senior team members, manage project grants and monitor their implementation. She/he will directly interact with and support the international team by identifying needs, providing technical advice and coordinating and implementing project activities.
