NFB - About the NFB

Role

True to its original mandate to interpret the social and cultural realities of Canada, the NFB promotes Canadian values throughout Canada and around the world through its production, distribution and educational activities.

The NFB as an instrument of social change

The NFB is a unique production centre that promotes citizen involvement and expression. With production focusing on documentary and auteur animation, it promotes the exploration of major contemporary social issues, with an emphasis on diverse, hard-hitting, point-of-view films. In expressing a genuinely Canadian viewpoint that is recognized in Canada and abroad, the institution plays a key role in the Canadian film and television industry.

One of the NFB's key objectives is to make these works accessible to as many people as possible and to encourage dialogue with Canadians. It does this through its high tech media centres in urban centres (CineRobotheque in Montreal and Mediatheque in Toronto) and by holding public screenings and workshops in different communities across the country. Several online initiatives such as CineRoute, Parole citoyenne and CitizenShift, and the NFB Film Club also help to establish a direct connection with Canadians and to create interest groups.

As Canadians' audiovisual memory, the NFB is open to the world and the future: it promotes the emergence of new talent, encourages artistic and technological innovation, develops partnerships within Canada and around the world, and actively participates in the production of online content for young audiences.
