Mon oncle Antoine (1971)
A small Quebec mining town in 1940. It is Christmas Eve, the only time of the year that the factory doors are shut. During these few hours of celebration, a 15-year-old boy will be initiated into the adult world--with all its tragedies and its follies. Mon oncle Antoine won 21 international awards and was named "Best Canadian Film Ever Made" by the Toronto International Film Festival. It remains a testament to Jutra's creative genius. A Chairy Tale (1957)
This experimental short, directed by Norman McLaren and Claude Jutra, shows the daring and originality already present in Jutra's work by the late 1950s. In this tale without words, Jutra tries to sit on a chair (animated by Evelyn Lambart) that declines to be sat upon. Music is performed by Ravi Shankar and Chatur Lal.
