QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, December 15, 2006 -- The Honourable Vic Toews, Q.C., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Eva Petras, a lawyer with the law firm of Eva Petras in Montreal is appointed a Puisne Judge of the Superior Court of Quebec, District of Montreal. She replaces Madam Justice N. Duval Hesler ( Montreal) who was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Quebec.

Madam Justice Eva Petras received a Bachelor of Common Law and a Bachelor of Civil Law in 1980 from McGill University and a Bachelor of Arts in 1971 from Marianopolis College/ Université de Montréal and was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1981. She practised with MacKenzie Gervais (1981-1986) and Lapointe Rosenstein (1986-1990) before starting her own firm in 1990. Madam Justice Petras' practice expertise is in the area of family law and litigation. She has been a lecturer in Family Law at McGill University Law Faculty and a member of both the Disciplinary Committee and the Professional Inspection Committee of the Barreau du Québec. She is a Past President of the Canadian Slovak Professional and Business Association.

The Honourable Etienne Parent, a lawyer with the firm of Parent Doyon Rancourt in Saint-Georges-de-Beauce is appointed a Puisne Judge of the Superior Court of Quebec, District of Quebec. He replaces Mr. Justice B. Bernard ( Quebec) who resigned.

Mr. Justice Etienne Parent received a baccalauréart en droit in 1982 from Université Laval and was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1983. He has practised since 1983 with the firm of Parent Doyon Rancourt with his practice expertise in the area of general civil law specializing in insurance law, agricultural law, administrative law, corporate and commercial law, municipal law and intellectual property law. Mr. Justice Parent is a past instructor of business law courses at CEGEP Lévis-Lauzon in Saint-Georges-de-Beauce and is very active in community organizations including the Club Richelieu St-Georges, the Association En Coeur Québec and the Beauce Regional Tennis Club.

These appointments are effective immediately.
