BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, February 7, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Risa Levine a judge of the British Columbia Supreme Court is appointed a judge of the British Columbia Court of Appeal. She replaces the Honourable Thomas R. Braidwood, who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Levine received her LL.B. from the University of British Columbia in 1977 and was called to the Bar of British Columbia the following year. She was appointed to the British Columbia Supreme Court in 1995. Madam Justice Levine served as a member of the Family Law Committee and of the Education Committee of the British Columbia Supreme Court. She has also helped to co-ordinate judicial education programs through the National Judicial Institute in Ottawa on a variety of topics including family and commercial law.

This appointment is effective immediately.
