ALBERTA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, March 2, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Frans F. Slatter of Edmonton is appointed a Judge of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench. He replaces Mr. Justice Edward P. MacCallum who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Slatter immigrated to Canada with his family in 1961 from South Africa. He received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta followed by a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1977. After serving as a Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada, Mr. Justice Slatter was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1979. The following year, he received a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford and was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1981.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Justice Slatter was a partner in the Edmonton firm of McCuaig, Desrochers in general practice, with litigation experience at both trial and appellate levels in commercial, personal injury and estate matters. He also has extensive experience in real estate, corporate law, securities, and wills and estates. Mr. Justice Slatter has been a frequent contributor to various publications particularly The Guide to Civil Procedure and Jones & DeVillars Principles of Administrative Law.

This appointment is effective immediately.
