QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS

OTTAWA, March 2, 2001 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable A. Anne McLellan, today announced the following appointments:

Bernard Godbout, of Sainte-Foy, is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court, District of Quebec. He replaces Mr. Justice François Pelletier who has been appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal.

Mr. Justice Godbout received his LL.B. from the University of Laval in 1975 and was called to the Quebec Bar the following year. At the time of his appointment, he was practising law with the Sainte-Foy firm of Kronstrom Desjardins, primarily in administrative law, including the areas of the environment, agri-food, health and social services, access to information and pensions. During his career, Mr. Justice Godbout has appeared before all levels of courts as well as many administrative tribunals. Mr. Justice Godbout is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice and the Société de Droit Administratif du Québec.

Danièle Mayrand, of Montreal, is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court, District of Montreal. She replaces the late Mr. Justice George B. Maughan.

Madam Justice Mayrand received her LL.B. from the University of Montreal in 1977 and was called to the Barreau du Québec the following year. Prior to her appointment, she practised law within the firm Desjardins, Ducharme, Stein, Monast, in Montreal, primarily in administrative law with a particular interest in benefits and pension plans. She also has experience in commercial law, especially in insolvency law. Throughout her career, Justice Mayrand has appeared before all levels of courts and various administrative tribunals. Madam Justice Mayrand is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous publications in her area of expertise.

These appointments are effective immediately.
