BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, March 27, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Harry A. Slade, Q.C., of North Vancouver is appointed a Judge of the British Columbia Supreme Court. He replaces Mr. Justice J.T. Edwards who has resigned from his position on the British Columbia Supreme Court.

Mr. Justice Slade received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia in 1973, and was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia the following year. At the time of his appointment, he was a senior partner with the North Vancouver firm of Ratcliff & Company. In addition to litigation and commercial negotiation, Mr. Justice Slade practiced primarily in the area of Aboriginal law. He has extensive experience in all aspects of Aboriginal rights, specific claims negotiation, reserve land use and self-government. Throughout his career, he has been a frequent presenter at professional and academic seminars on such matters. Mr. Justice Slade was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1998.

This appointment is effective immediately.
