BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, April 6, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

Brian M. Joyce, of Port Coquitlam, is appointed a Judge of the British Columbia Supreme Court. He replaces Madam Justice R.E. Levine, who was appointed to the British Columbia Court of Appeal.

Mr. Justice Joyce obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta and was awarded the Horace Harvey Gold Medal in Law in 1977. He was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia the following year. Mr. Justice Joyce began practice with the Vancouver firm of Richards Buells Sutton (formerly Cumming, Richards & Co.), becoming a partner in 1981. In 1989, Mr. Justice Joyce was appointed a Master of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Throughout his career, Mr. Justice Joyce has been a regular contributor to programs and publications for the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, as well as a presenter at the People's Law School.

Catherine A. Wedge, of Vancouver, is appointed a Judge of the British Columbia Supreme Court. She replaces Mr. Justice R.B. Harvey, who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Wedge received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan in 1980 and was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia the following year. At the time of her appointment, she was a partner with the Victory Square Law Office (formerly Baigent, Jackson, Blair) of Vancouver, practicing in the area of labour and employment law. Throughout her career, she has appeared before various administrative tribunals, as well as the British Columbia Supreme Court and the British Columbia Court of Appeal. A frequent speaker at professional seminars on labour law topics, Madam Justice Wedge is also the author of various publications for employment and labour law journals.

These appointments are effective immediately.
