ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, August 1, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Eleanore A. Cronk, of Toronto is appointed a Judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal. She replaces the Honourable Stephen Borins who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Cronk received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1975 and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1977.  She practised with the Toronto firm of Fasken & Calvin (later known as Fasken Campbell Godfrey) specializing in civil litigation.  In 1997, she became a founding partner in the specialty counsel firm of Lax O'Sullivan Cronk in Toronto.

Madam Justice Cronk has appeared before all levels of courts in Ontario and Canada as well as before a variety of administrative tribunals including the Ontario Municipal Board, the Environmental Assessment Board and the Ontario Human Rights Commission.  She has served as Counsel to certain Inquiries, most recently, as Counsel to the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario before the Walkerton Inquiry.

Madam Justice Cronk has been a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1995 and served as President of the The Advocates' Society (1993-94).  She is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.  In 2000, Madam Justice Cronk received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Windsor.

This appointment is effective immediately.
