CANADIAN HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA , February 21, 2005 Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the appointment of Julie Lloyd as a part-time member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT).

Ms. Lloyd is an Edmonton lawyer, originally from Sarnia , Ontario . In addition to her current legal practice, she has taught various courses at the University of Alberta ’s Faculty of Law. Ms. Lloyd has also been an active public speaker on human rights issues, and has had her work published in the Alberta Law Review and Law Now, a publication produced by the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law.

Ms. Lloyd has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada, various human rights tribunals, the Federal Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench.

She is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association, and is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for Volunteerism. She is also a recipient of the Maureen Irwin award in recognition of service to the Lesbian and Gay Communities of Edmonton and is an inductee to the Edmonton Pride Committee Hall of Fame.

The CHRT inquires into complaints of discrimination to decide if what is alleged to have occurred is a discriminatory practice under the Canadian Human Rights Act. Its main goal is to ensure that the Act is interpreted and applied fairly and impartially at all its hearings.
