ALBERTA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, November 24, 2005 – Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Alan D. Macleod of Calgary is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta. He replaces Mr. Justice P.W.L. Martin who was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Alberta.

Mr. Justice Macleod received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1970 and a Master of Laws from the University of London in 1975. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1971.

At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with the firm Macleod Dixon and practised primarily in the areas of civil litigation, commercial law and aboriginal law

Mr. Justice Macleod is a past lecturer at the Bar Admission Course, the Canadian Bar Association and the Legal Education Society of Alberta. He is the former Chair of the National Insurance Section of the Canadian Bar Association and past president and Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta. In addition, he has acted as the Law Society of Alberta’s representative on the Board of the Alberta Law Reform Institute. He is the author of several legal publications.

This appointment is effective immediately.
