YUKON JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT

OTTAWA, January 13, 2000 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Anne McLellan, today announced the following appointment:

Ronald S. Veale of Whitehorse is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of theYukon Territory. He fills a new position in this Court.

Mr. Justice Veale obtained his LL.B. from the University of Toronto in 1971, and was called to the Bar of the Yukon Territory and to the Bar of Ontario in 1973. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Justice Veale was the senior partner in the law firm of Veale, Austring, Fendrick & Fairman in Whitehorse, practising primarily in the field of civil litigation. Mr. Justice Veale is certified as a Family Law Mediator and as an Advanced Commercial Mediator.

During his career, Mr. Justice Veale has been President of the Law Society of the Yukon and of the Yukon Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. He is a member of the Discipline Committee of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories. He has been very active in community volunteer organizations and served as Chair of the United Way Society of the Yukon and was first Chair of the Yukon Arts Centre.

This appointment is effective January 25, 2000.
