QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, May 7, 2004 -- Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable François Doyon of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Quebec. He replaces Mr. Justice J.L. Baudouin who has elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Doyon received a Bachelor of Laws from l'Université Laval in 1973 and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1975.

He was appointed a judge of the Court of Quebec in 1991 and appointed Associate Chief Judge, Criminal and Penal Division, of the same court in 2002. Prior to his initial appointment to the bench, he had been Assistant chief prosecutor for the Attorney General of Quebec.

Mr. Justice Doyon has been a member of the Tribunal des professions and has been responsible for regional training at the Criminal and Penal Division. He has also taught at the Faculty of law of l'Université de Montréal as well as at the Bar Admission Course. He was a member of the editorial board of the Canadian Criminal Law Review. He is the author of several legal articles.

This appointment is effective immediately.
