QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, June 4, 2002 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Martin Cauchon, today announced the following appointment:

Marie St-Pierre of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in Montreal. She replaces Mr. Justice Herbert Marx who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Madame Justice St-Pierre received a licence en droit from the University of Montreal in 1978. She was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1979, and began practice with the Montreal firm of Blain Piché Emery. In 1989, she became a partner with the firm of Desjardins, Ducharme, Stein, Monast in Montreal where, at the time of her appointment, she was practicing primarily in the areas of civil and commercial litigation, administrative law and labour law. Throughout her career, she has been an instructor for the Bar Admission Course of the Bar of Quebec and a regular presenter at various professional conferences and seminars in her areas of expertise. Madame Justice St-Pierre is the author of numerous newspaper articles on a range of legal topics and is co-author of the book L'entreprise et ses salariés (1997).

This appointment is effective immediately.
