QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, November 8, 2002 – The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Martin Cauchon, today announced the following appointment:

Yves-Marie Morissette of Montréal is appointed a judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal.  He replaces Madam Justice Marie Deschamps who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mr. Justice Morissette graduated in law, with distinction, from l’Université de Montréal in 1973, and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1977.  A Rhodes scholar, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford University (England) in 1978.

Since 1991, Mr. Justice Morissette has been a Professor of Law at McGill University where, at the time of his appointment he was the Arnold Wainwright, Q.C. Professor of Civil Law.  He served as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1989 to 1994. He has published extensively in administrative law, evidence, comparative law and legal theory.  For the last 10 years, Mr. Justice Morissette has also been very involved in continuing judicial education in Canada and abroad. 

Throughout his career, Mr. Justice Morissette has been a member of numerous committees of the Barreau du Québec and since 1999, has served as Vice-Chair of the Ethics Committee.  He is a former President of the Canadian Council of Law Deans (1993-94) and a former Vice-President of the Fondation du Barreau du Québec (1992-98). 

This appointment is affected immediately.
