NASA Shuttle

The government of Canada and the Government of the United States have entered into an agreement whereby Transport Canada staff monitor NASA Space Shuttle launches where the NASA Space Shuttle may be required to complete an emergency landing or a crew bailout within the confines of Canadian territory or international waters bordering Canadian Territory.

Transport Canada has developed a contingency plan, TP 12952E, which outlines the procedures which will be followed in the event of an actual emergency landing or crew bailout of the NASA Space Shuttle.

The contingency plan has been coordinated with the various components of Transport Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Department of National Defence, the Department of Justice, the Embassy of the United States of America (Ottawa), the United States Department of State and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States of America.

This contingency plan details the specific responsibilities and obligations of all parties involved in the monitoring of launches and the response to a declared emergency and is intended to amplify the "Exchange of Diplomatic Notes" between the Embassy of the United States of America and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

Sites currently covered by the agreement are:

  • Gander International Airport, Gander, Nfld.;
  • Halifax International Airport, N.S.;
  • St. John's Airport, St. John's, Nfld.;
  • Stephenville Airport, Stephenville, Nfld; and
  • CFB Goose Bay, Goose Bay, Labrador.
