THE SECOND TEMPLE PERIOD
On the Northwest Shore of the Dead Sea, East of Jerusalem
Archaeological Digs at Qumran
Between 1951 and 1956, digs led by Roland de Vaux, of France, at the
Qumran site turned up buildings that pointed to a busy community, with
a meeting hall, a large kitchen, a copying room, two pottery kilns and
an elaborate water supply system. Strangely, though, there were no traces
of residences. Did the members of the community sleep in the nearby caves,
where some objects were found? In tents? Upstairs in the buildings?
