Every year, hundreds of thousands of dollars are showered over the world's most talented writers. Although not all awards come with a heavy purse, literacy has become lucrative and increased sales after such recognition have made prize-winning writers good publishing investments.

Here are just a few of the biggest and brightest honours given each year in the business:

The Giller Prize
$25,000 awarded to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English.

Nobel Prize for Literature
Approximately $1.5 million (the prize amount varies) as well as a medal and a specially commissioned diploma are awarded to authors for their entire body of work.

Man Booker Prize for Fiction
Approximately $110,000 awarded to the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the Commonwealth.

IMPAC Dublin literary award
$146,000 and a Waterford crystal trophy are given to the world's best book published in English.

Orange Prize for Fiction
The author of the best novel written in English by a woman and published in Britain is presented with a "Bessie" and $65,000.

The Governor General's Literary Awards
The Canada Council for the Arts selects seven French books and seven English books. Winners are given $15,000 and a special edition of their book.

Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
$10,000 is given to an American author of a book that deals with American life.

Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize
The $40,000 award is split between a fiction and a non-fiction author of books that contribute to greater understanding and co-operation among the people of the Pacific Rim.

The Koret Foundation Awards
$15,000 is given to the author of a book addressing aspects of Jewish life.

Prix Goncourt
$10 and unlimited media attention are promised to the author of the best new work in French literature.

The Betty Trask Prizes
$55,000 is given for first novels published in the United Kingdom in English by Commonwealth citizens under 35.
