Student Budget Debate

The debate panelists
On March 31, CBC Newsworld hosted a special Student Budget Debate, live from Nepean High School in Ottawa. Finance Minister Ralph Goodale, Conservative finance critic Monte Solberg and NDP finance critic Judy Wasylycia-Leis responded to questions from students about the federal budget. The moderator was Don Newman, the host of Politics on CBC Newsworld.

The debate was the beginning of CBC News coverage of Student Vote 2004, an initiative aimed at increasing students’ participation in their communities, and in the electoral process. CBC News and cbc.ca are the official broadcast partners for the student vote project, which is a joint initiative with Elections Canada.

Each of the questions that began a segment of the debate is outlined below. Although some of the questions were posed to a specific person, each of the others also had time to answer.

Grade 12 student Soniya Mukhedkar asks a question on behalf of students from Fredericton High School in Fredericton. They want to know why there aren’t more spaces in universities for nursing students.

Amy Lester, a Grade 10 student, wants to know about plans for supporting education in developing countries.

Jacqueline Bird, a Grade 11 student, asks a question on behalf of students from Herdman Collegiate in Corner Brook. They want to know about money for the commitments in the Kyoto accord.
