On March 31, CBC Newsworld hosted a special Student Budget Debate, live from Nepean High School in Ottawa. Finance Minister Ralph Goodale, Conservative finance critic Monte Solberg and NDP finance critic Judy Wasylycia-Leis responded to questions from students about the federal budget. The moderator was Don Newman, the host of Politics on CBC Newsworld.
The debate was the beginning of CBC News coverage of Student Vote 2004, an initiative aimed at increasing students’ participation in their communities, and in the electoral process. CBC News and cbc.ca are the official broadcast partners for the student vote project, which is a joint initiative with Elections Canada.
Each of the questions that began a segment of the debate is outlined below. Although some of the questions were posed to a specific person, each of the others also had time to answer.
