24/12/2007: Bert Tatham

Bert Tatham was on his way home from Afghanistan where he was working on an anti-poppy campaign for the Afghan Ministry of Counter-Narcotics. After stopping in Dubai, he was detained when customs officials found two poppy bulbs in his luggage and trace amounts of powdered hashish in the lining of his jeans pocket. This led to eight months in prison, during which time he says he was abused. He joined The Current to discuss his experience.

Don't give someone a piece of junk they don't really want, give them a gift that keeps on giving -- a purchase, in their name, of a desperately needed item to a poor farmer in another country. That's the thinking behind the an increasingly popular form of charitable giving. The phenomenon does, however, have its critics.

18/12/2007: British handover of Basra, Iraq

Citing success in bringing democracy to the southern Iraqi city of Basra, along with a reported 90% decline in violence, the British Prime Minister has handed over jurisdiction of the area to Iraqi authorities. Some, however, question the optimism. Militias are said to be stronger than the police, and violence against women is rampant.

Devra Davis, cancer specialist and the author of the new book, The Secret History of The War On Cancer, says the decades-long "war on cancer" has achieved little if any progress in fighting the terrible illness. The truth, according to her, is one no one wants to admit: a direct connection between cancer and the environment.
