Appendix A - Measles Surveillance: Guidelines for Laboratory Support
NATIONAL SURVEILLANCE MEASLES CASE DEFINITION
Confirmed Case
- A confirmed case is characterized by one of the following: laboratory
confirmation of infection* in the absence of recent
(1 to 14 days) immunization with measles-containing vaccine:
- isolation of measles virus from an appropriate clinical specimen
- or, significant rise in measles specific antibody titre between
acute and convalescent sera
- or, positive serologic test for measles IgM antibody using a
recommended assay
- or, clinical measles in a person who is epidemiologically linked
to a laboratory-confirmed case
Clinical Case A clinical case is characterized by all of the following:
- fever >= 38.3oC
- cough, coryza, or conjunctivitis
- generalized maculopapular rash for at least 3 days
* A laboratory-confirmed case does not have to meet
the clinical illness description.
