Appendix A - Measles Surveillance: Guidelines for Laboratory Support

NATIONAL SURVEILLANCE MEASLES CASE DEFINITION

Confirmed Case

  • A confirmed case is characterized by one of the following: laboratory confirmation of infection* in the absence of recent (1 to 14 days) immunization with measles-containing vaccine:
    • isolation of measles virus from an appropriate clinical specimen
    • or, significant rise in measles specific antibody titre between acute and convalescent sera
    • or, positive serologic test for measles IgM antibody using a recommended assay
  • or, clinical measles in a person who is epidemiologically linked to a laboratory-confirmed case

Clinical Case A clinical case is characterized by all of the following:

  • fever >= 38.3oC
  • cough, coryza, or conjunctivitis
  • generalized maculopapular rash for at least 3 days

* A laboratory-confirmed case does not have to meet the clinical illness description.
